Five new greenfield airports in two years

Five new greenfield airports are scheduled to come up in the next two years, according to the information shared the Minister of Civil Aviation, Praful Patel, in the parliament. These airports would be located at Pakyong in Sikkim, Shimoga, Gulbarga, Bijapur and Hassan in Karnataka.
Government provides financial assistance for the development of existing and new airports in the North-East Region. Accordingly, the 90% funding of the cost for the construction of new Greenfield airport at Pakyong Sikkim is provided by the government.
Besides these five airports, the government has also accorded ‘in-principle’ approval to the establishment of airports at Navi Mumbai & Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, Mopa in Goa, Kannur in Kerala, Durgapur in West Bengal, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh & Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh (for Cargo airport).
Further, proposals for establishment of new airport at Chakan, Shirdi & Solapur in Maharashtra, Kushinagar, Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, Ludhiana in Punjab, Karaikal in Puducherry, Cheitu in Nagarland & Paladi in Rajasthan have been received. A proposal for setting up of a Cargo airport at Jhajhar in Harayana has been received.
