Two New Projects for UP under JNNURM approved

The Ministry of Urban Development has approved two new projects for Agra and Meerut, Uttar Pradesh under JNNURM. The Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) under the Ministry for sanctioning of projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), Submission-I on Urban Infrastructure and Governance (UIG) has approved Agra Sewerage Scheme Project Phase-I (Part-1) and Sewerage Works in Sewerage Zone-5&7 of Meerut city under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Urban Development Dr M Ramachandran.
The Agra Sewerage Scheme, Phase-1 (Part-1) project has been designed to provide sewerage facilities in two main important zones of Central & Tajganj in a comprehensive manner, out of eight zones of Agra city.
The existing sewerage system is available in 25% of the core area of the city, about 15% of the Northern and Western Sewerage zones are being covered under ongoing projects under YAP-II / JNNURM projects and a part of the southern zone is in the State sector programme making the total available sewered area in the city at 30%. Central zone consists of 40 wards while Tajganj zone covers 8 wards.
The project aims to collect, convey, & treat the sewerage and disposal as per PCB standard. The project will be completed by December 2009. According to the State Government the project will achieve 100% standardized service level benchmarks in collection and treatment of waste water,
capacity utilization of waste water treatment facility, and 70-80% benchmarks in respect of reuse & recycling of treated water and cost recovery in waste water management.
Toilets constructed in slum areas and other location will be connected with sewer lines. Nagar Nigam will be taking steps to eradicate the open defecation and manual scavenging by the year 2010. About 37% population will be benefited through this project which will cover 19% of the area of the city. The existing STP is for 156 MLD and will provide additional 28 MLD under JNNURM project.
Sewerage Works in Sewerage Zone-5&7 of Meerut City: This project is the first sewerage project under JNNURM in Meerut and aims to provide sewerage facility in zone 5 and 7 which comprise the core areas in Meerut City. The project aims at a comprehensive and planned systems to collect,
convey, and treat the sewerage and disposal as per PCB standard. At present only 460 Km branch sewer exists in the Nagar Nigam Area.
The present coverage of city with sewerage system is about 12% of total area and covers 25% of population. There are 6 intermediate pumping stations, one main pumping station and one 5 MLD treatment plant at Pallapuram against requirement of 184 MLD. The project will lay 246.8 kms of sewers, 4 intermediate pumping stations, 2 main pumping stations, 3.32 kms of rising mains, 72 MLD of STP. Water supply project has already been sanctioned under JNNURM and by the time the project is implemented, the desired level of 150 Ipcd would be achieved. Meerut is categorized as Minority town. The entire project will be completed by March 2012.
