Railways to launch more Duranto trains
The Indian Railways has for now put on the backburner its plans to increase the number of Rajdhani trains in their bid to accommodate more Duranto trains. In keeping with Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee’s budget announcements of launching 12 non-stop Duranto’s, the Railways will be introducing three Duranto trains – Nagpur-Mumbai, Delhi-Lucknow/Allahabad and Mumbai-Ahmedabad, within a month.
As per plans, Rajdhani trains with all AC coaches, will be operated long distances connecting state capitals with New Delhi, while Duranto trains with non-AC bogies will be primarily used for short journeys, targeting passengers who cannot afford to travel in Rajdhanis.
According to railway officials, Duranto trains will take less time in reaching their destinations vis-a-vis a Rajdhani, as they would not halt in between. For example, the newly run Duranto between Delhi-Sealdah takes one-and-half hour less time compared to the Rajdhani on the same route. The fare of a Duranto is also lower compared to the iconic Rajdhanis.
The proposed new Duranto trains will connect cities such as Pune, Amritsar, Cochin, Bangalore, Nagpur and Bhubaneshwar.
