MMRDA to receive 71.04 hectares of land for four Metro route car sheds

A total of 71.04 hectares of land is set to be allocated to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to establish car sheds for four metro routes: Metro 4 (connecting Wadala to Kasarwadavli), Metro 4A (connecting Kasarwadavli to Gaimukh), Metro 10 (from Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk in Mira Road), and Metro 12 (extending from Kalyan to Taloja).

The designated plot in Survey No. 30 was originally state-owned and utilised for agricultural purposes. It had been leased to 167 lessees. Situated close to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Ghodbunder Road, this land will serve a vital role in expanding Mumbai’s metro network.

In June, residents of the Mogharpada locality expressed their opposition to the construction of the car shed, advocating for fair compensation for locals affected by the project. Local villagers even staged a protest in front of the Thane revenue office during a visit by revenue and MMRDA officials before the onset of the monsoon.

Local representatives from the Shiv Sena, who supported the villagers’ cause, penned a letter to the then MMRDA commissioner, SVR Srinivas, requesting a halt to the land acquisition process. The proposed policy indicates that land occupants are likely to receive 22.5 per cent of the developed land as compensation, following a model similar to the policy employed by CIDCO.

In August, the MMRDA secured land for a car shed dedicated to the forthcoming Metro Line 12, linking Kalyan to Taloja. Specifically, the Thane collector transferred 47 hectares of land in Niljepada to the MMRDA for this purpose.
