Foundation stone laid for Rs 220 cr airport project in Shivamogga
The project will come up at Sogane
Chief Minister of Karnataka B S Yediyurappa on 15 June 2020 laid the foundation stone for construction of Rs 220 crore airport project in Shivamogga.
The project will come up at Sogane to be spread over 662.38 acre of land. It is expected to be completed in 18 months for commissioning the airport by the state-run Airport Authority of India (AAI).
The airport runway will be extended to 2.1 km from 1.2 km for enabling full-fledged operations and landing of passenger and cargo jets.
State-run and low-cost carriers can operate feeder services under the Ude Desk ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) regional connectivity scheme between Shivamogga and Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi and Bidar across the state.
Flight operations are likely to begin from 2021-end or early 2022. Initially, turbo-prop ATR-72 aircraft will operate for regional connectivity with feeder service
The airport project will be taken up in two phases--Phase-I comprises runway, taxiway, apron, approach road, peripheral road and compound wall construction, while Phase-II consists of terminal building, ATC tower, fire station building, among others.
The CM also inaugurated the divisional office of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in the district. Apart from this, a foot-over-bridge (FOB) will also be built across river Sharavati at Singndur in Sagara taluk.
