PM to inaugurate National Conference on JNNURM
The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the National Conference on Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) on 3rd December at Vigyan Bhawan, the day mission completes its 4 years since its inception.
Union Minister for Urban Development Shri S.Jaipal Reddy will deliver the welcome address on the occasion. The prime Minister will also give away trophies for Best City for Urban Infrastructure & Governance, Best Mass Transit Project, Best City for Basic Services for Urban Poor and Best City for implementation of inclusive city reforms.
Ministers and Secretaries of Urban Development, Housing and Local Self Government of States and UTs, Mayors/Commissioners of Mission cities and selected small towns/cities, State Level Nodal agencies for JNNURM, IT Secretaries of States/UTs, Officers of Central and State governments will participate in the conference. Discussion will be held to review the progress and implementation of JNNURM and to formulate the strategy for the way forward for the mission.
JNNURM was launched on 3rd December,2005 to give focused attention to integrated development of Urban infrastructure and services in 65 cities with emphasis on provision of basic services to the urban poor including housing, water supply, sanitation, slum improvement, community toilets/baths etc. The mission, being implemented by Ministry of Urban Development and Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, is the single largest initiative of the Government of India for the planned development of our cities and responds to the long-standing demand for tapping vast potential and vitality of our cities.
The Mission is also an important element of the National Common Minimum Programme. JNNURM consists of four components-Urban Infrastructure & Governance, Urban Infrastructure Development in small and Medium Towns, Basic Services to Urban Poor and Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme.
