This year’s summer palette

Vinayak Chadha, MD, The KariGhars, shares his insights into the latest summer design trends

As the days grow longer and the sun reaches its zenith, our natural inclination is to shed the weight of winter and immerse ourselves in the vibrancy of summer. This transition extends beyond our closets and into our living spaces. With thoughtful design tweaks, one can infuse their home with the light, warmth, and vitality of the season.

A burst of citrus: Citrus tones like lemon yellow, lime green, and grapefruit pink perennially dominate summer palettes. These uplifting hues evoke feelings of freshness and joy. Try incorporating a zesty lime green accent wall, adorning your space with sunny yellow throw pillows, or introducing pops of grapefruit pink through artwork or decor.

Earthy neutrals for equilibrium: While bright colours inject energy, a balanced summer palette includes soothing neutrals. Introducing shades of beige, light taupe, and sandy hues reminiscent of sun-drenched beaches, can help create a grounding effect, allowing brighter accents to stand out!

Embrace blues and greens: Channel the tranquility of nature with calming blues and verdant greens. A serene sky blue accent wall can enhance the sense of spaciousness, while deeper teal tones add sophistication. One can also integrate lush greenery, from deep emerald to soft sage, to infuse life and vibrancy. Furthermore, pairing these cool tones with citrus accents can foster a truly summery ambiance.

Natural textures: Summer invites the embrace of natural materials like rattan, wicker, and jute. These elements introduce organic texture and cultivate a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. Opt for a woven jute rug, incorporate a rattan side table, or hang woven wall art to evoke outdoor charm indoors.

Light and airy fabrics: As temperatures soar, swap heavy winter fabrics for breathable alternatives. Choose linen throws, cotton curtains, and sheer blinds to invite natural light into your space. These lightweight fabrics foster an open, airy feel ideal for summer.

Pattern play: Delicate and ethereal, light, airy patterns captivate the eye with their subtle allure, infusing spaces with a sense of whimsy and charm. So, bring in some geometric designs in cool tones or floral prints featuring summery blooms. Don’t shy away from experimenting with scale by juxtaposing larger and smaller patterns for dynamic appeal.

Green living: Summer encourages a connection with nature. Bring your home to life with an array of indoor plants. Lush ferns evoke tropical vibes while trailing vines lend a cascading effect. Strategically place succulents and cacti for low-maintenance greenery. One can also extend their living space outdoors by creating a cozy patio seating area with comfortable chairs and weather-resistant cushions.

By incorporating these design trends, you can cultivate a summer sanctuary in your home. However, there is no single approach to this instead, experiment with colours, textures, and patterns to craft a space that embodies your unique style and summer spirit. So, embrace the season, bask in the sunshine, and relish a summer filled with vibrant living.
