What was the biggest challenge you faced while working on this project?
Amita: A major challenge to design this was that it was a compact site with no views which matters in second homes. By designing the house around a crescent pool with internal courtyards and semi-open walkways, we created introspective houses that focused on its internal landscape and beautiful old trees. Another technical challenge was to ensure that the double-height living space must face outside with sliding folding doors that spanned across the width of the living space.
What is your favourite design element/s of this home? Why?
Amita: The living room with its double-height lunar wall and large folding and sliding doors overlooking the pool is interesting. Along with that, we love the semi-outdoor louvred walkway between the living and bedroom spaces that overlooks the crescent pool, creating a play of sun and shadows that one can enjoy, traditionally called “susegaad“ in Goa.
How do you expect private homes of the future to change going by the world today?
Amita: A trend we will see in 2021 is emphasis on well-being and multifunctional spaces. Designers will have to ensure that spaces within homes can be converted to temporary work zones or learning areas for children. There will be a need to create spaces that are bright and with plants for that sense of outdoor and well-being. Even in smaller homes, people might carve out a semi-outdoor kind of space through a balcony, patio or just a large window reveal.
Fenestration plays an aesthetic and functional role. How do you choose them?
Amita: Fenestration is a critical part of our project, as a lot of our architectural impact lies in bridging the outside and inside, as well as optimum use of natural light while screening the sun. Hence we recommend clients to use high-quality windows and doors across projects. We also recommend high-quality glazing that incorporates in-built gutters within the frame to avoid water leakage, double glazing for better sound and heat insulation as well as for durability and low maintenance.
What innovation or product does Schueco bring to the Indian fenestration industry?
Ayaz: The human need for comfort and well-being (physical and mental) drives innovation in the fenestration industry too. Windows, doors and facades let in natural light and ventilation, minimise outdoor noise and provide safety from harsh weather. These not only contribute to a healthier indoor environment but also increase efficiency. Keeping these in cognizance, we will introduce automated systems, a new slimline slider, anti-microbial handles to name a few.
