ElectroMech is an amazing leaf of success from India’s infrastructure story. In this interaction with Niranjan Mudholkar, Tushar Mehendale, MD-ElectroMech discusses the role played by his company across segments

Please name the key project/s executed (or ongoing) by your company in Metro railway projects.
We have supplied a lot of hoisting equipment to metro projects. We were one of the pioneers in India in designing, manufacturing and commissioning special pre-cast segment lifting hoists for use on launching girders of Delhi Metro Project.
We have supplied six such 60MT hoists more than 8 years back to Gammon India for their different sites. These hoists had to fit in very tight geometries (as the segments required for the metro rail are pretty narrow as compared to a road bridge) and at the same time lift 60MT weight safely and securely. We are proud of our contribution to the prestigious Delhi Metro Project where huge lengths of track were built using our launching girder hoists.
We have also supplied last year several pre-cast segment handling gantry cranes for the Bangalore Metro project which is still under construction. This was for Navayuga Construction. We are also supplying more cranes for the same project to Gammon India for their portion of work.
Our pre-cast segment handling yard gantry cranes are also being deployed for the upcoming Chennai Metro project where Soma is one of the major contractors executing this project.
We will also be providing segment lifting hoisting mechanisms mounted on launching girders for several upcoming metro projects in the country.
In addition to supplying equipment at the construction stage, we also have a portfolio of equipment that can be used for regular maintenance activity of the rolling track in the maintenance workshops.
We are also supplying several cranes to a company which will be eventually involved in manufacturing rolling stock for several metro rail projects.

What are the major challenges facing this sector today?
The ability to safely and securely lift the pre-cast segments bang in the middle of the city with teeming traffic all around poses a challenge. Strict discipline is required in designing and manufacturing of hoisting equipment for these projects to ensure that there isn’t even a remote possibility of accidents happening.

How important will this sector be for your company?
The sheer efficiency of a well executed metro rail project for public transportation is amazing. Delhi Metro has shown that executing world class projects is possible in India. The increasing competency of Indian construction companies to undertake and successfully execute complicated construction project coupled with an development of indigenous manufacturing facilities for products allied to metro rail, this sector is going to be quite an exciting sector in the next decade.

How crucial is the role played by ElectroMech in the Indian power sector?
ElectroMech is today India’s largest manufacturer of industrial cranes in terms of volumes. ElectroMech supplies cranes to a host of different industry verticals. Power/Energy vertical is one of the most important industries where a lot of ElectroMech cranes are present. A recent example can be our supply of more than 100 cranes to Hansen Eurodrive, a multinational company involved in manufacturing gearboxes for wind turbines. Another example can be our supply over more than 25 cranes to Lanco Infratech for their various power plant projects across the country.

How significant has been the company’s contribution to the infrastructure sector?
Infrastructure industry in India is a booming industry and infra companies have currently a huge order backlog. Newer projects are being announced and we expect the current government to unleash a huge package of projects for the infrastructure industry. We have made a mark in this industry by catering to the stalwarts of this industry like Gammon India, HCC, Jaiprakash Industries, L&T ECC, Navayuga, Patel Engineering and Soma.
Our cranes find use in pre-cast handling yards or for building bridges or in excavating deep shafts and tunnels or in yard fabrication. The list of applications is endless. We are proud to say that we are associated with some of the major infrastructure projects in the country like Delhi Metro Rail, Bangalore Elevated Highway, Bangalore Metro, Chennai Metro, Delhi – Mumbai Freight Corridor, Koyana Stage IV, Nathpa Jakhri, Subansiri – the actual list is quite exhaustive.

How did the company acquire the recognition it has today?
The philosophy of our company has always been to offer the best global technology to our clients. In this pursuit of excellence, over the years, we have built a strong organizational DNA that ensures that our customers derive maximum value from their investments in our equipment.
Due to our relentless focus on customer requirements, we have been able to fine tune our product offerings and thus have managed to build a recognition of the ElectroMech brand as a brand that stands for quality, innovation, reliability and service.

What new products have you launched in recent times?
No significant new product launch done recently. We have come up with newer versions of existing products with some more features.

What factors should be in favour for the material handling industry to prosper?
Like any other industry, the material handling industry will prosper only if the economy is growing. Material Handling industry falls in the purview of capital goods. There is an enhanced requirement in capital goods only when newer capacities are being set up.
Newer capacity setup depends on enhancements in customer demands. Hence higher is the demand, more is the need for newer factories to cater to this demand and thus more will be the need for material handling equipment.

From which quarters does the industry face competition?
The material handling industry is a highly fragmented industry in India with competition coming from the unorganized sector as well as the organized sector. There are only a handful of crane companies active on a pan India basis, whereas majority of the crane companies cater only to the local demands. Hence competition comes from all these quarters.

In recent years, how have material handling equipment vendors and engineers reshaped the industry?
Recent years have seen an advent of superior control methodologies in terms of accuracy, repeatability and efficiency. The advent of superior electrical control methodologies through inverters and other sensors has ensured a more safer operation of the equipment.

How important is material handling equipment for logistics industry?
Material handling industry is the backbone of the logistics industry. Logistics basically involves moving goods from one place to another and for moving goods one requires a plethora of material handling equipment.

What plans have you to tap business opportunities in overseas markets?
We have our own subsidiary in Dubai through which we cater to the entire market of Middle East, CIS and Africa.
