NIGIS unveils one million+ anti-corrosion codes

The NACE International Gateway India Section (NIGIS) has unveiled more than 1 million anti-corrosion codes and standards for India Inc. during World Corcon 2009, an international conference and expo on corrosion, held recently. A Round Table conference on ‘Cost of Corrosion’ was held to decide the approach India should take to decide cost of corrosion, which runs into lakhs of crores every year. The 15th Corrosion Awareness Awards Ceremony was held during World Corcon 2009. (See list given below)
Rajan Bahri, Chairman, World Corcon 2009, and Trustee, NIGIS, said: “Indian companies must buy embedded technology for corrosion while importing the same from their international principals or rely on NIGIS to assist them in case of state-of-the-art Indian technology. NIGIS has more than 600 members in India, who can provide all possible guidance and knowledge sharing to Indian companies. There are several laboratories available for corrosion testing purposes. NIGIS has just released a book on corrosion case studies. NIGIS is the only authority mandated to provide Coating Inspector Program in India. The cost of corrosion can be determined by the cost, quality and frequency of maintenance costs.”
“Corrosion awareness is lacking in India. The huge amount of losses on account of corrosion; viz., over 3% of the GDP, can be controlled to some modest level by simply improving corrosion awareness. Simple engineering techniques and materials selections can be used to prevent and retard corrosion. The need of the hour is to have some legislation or statute so that corrosion audit becomes part of Indian industry infrastructure,” he added.
Over 700 delegates from the industry, academia, government departments and students participated in the seminar and symposia on four key themes on the context of corrosion and its control. These included Oil & Gas Industry, RCC & Infrastructure, Materials & Composites, Transportation & Automobiles and a special session on Corrosion Concerns in Defence.
