Buying green is becoming a rage. Barely a day goes by without the rollout of a environmentally green product. Right from electric cars to waterless car wash to low electricity consuming lights… you name it and there is a product available.
Perhaps the products that help one save energy appeal to those who value their future environmental benefits. But there is another side to this. Despite tangible financial rewards, most people do not make even small environmentally sound changes at home, such as installing energy-efficient light bulbs or not leaving the television on standby. Reports brought out by global consulting firms show that most people are concerned about climate change. But few are willing to convert their words into deeds.
However, that is not deterring manufacturers from launching new products (while phasing out old ones) that are green in nature. But they come at a premium. Most often, consumers who want to buy green and reduce their impact on the environment find that their earth-minded sentiments die on the vine. Businesses, on their part, need to do a lot more to educate prospective consumers turn their talk into walk.
In spite of this, sustainability has caught on. Websites of manufacturers making green products have an entire section dedicated to explaining the long-lasting benefits of using environmentally-friendly products. Moreover, corporations and consumers can real multiple benefits by going green. They can reduce their energy consumption, lessen their risks, meet competitive threats, enhance their brands, and increase their revenues.
Businesses must make consumers aware that a product exists before they buy it. They must be convinced that it can serve them well too. In order that consumers improve their opinions of green products, companies must create ones that are equal to, or better than, conventional alternatives. Consumers must find it easy to track their savings from using a product, especially those that cost more.
The next three pages of this issue are devoted to a list of products that have proved to be green. Of course, given the limitations, we could focus only on a few products and companies.

AIR CONDITIONING
CARRIER
Carrier has three products in the sustainable category. The Evergreen 23XRV chiller with Foxfire compression technology is the world’s first integrated variable speed, water cooled, screw chiller with industry leading IPLV’s of 0.33kW/ton. This chiller is 40% more energy efficient than conventional chillers.
The AquaForce 30XW-V comes with a capacity of 590-840kW and incorporates the Greenspeed technology. Utilising Greenspeed variable-frequency drive (VFD) technology, the inverter-driven, twin-rotor screw compressors allow the precise matching of capacity and building load changes and significantly reduce unit power input, especially at part load, achieving an Integrated part load value (IPLV) of 10. This efficiency level can reduce a building’s air conditioning energy consumption by up to about 30%.
Under Carrier’s light commercial R410a refrigerant-based product cassette range, four models have been launched – 1.5TR, 2.0TR, 3.0TR and 4.0TR. The 1.5TR and 2.0TR models are BEE four star labelled products. These units come with a voltage scanner that prevents the system from three-phase power issues. With digital scroll compressor, electronics expansion valve (EXV) and cordless remote (optional), this premium series of product is more advanced than existing ducted systems.

DAIKIN
While the core of Daikin India’s product offerings remains an intermix of inverter technology coupled with robust customer service, it also endeavours to bring technological advancements that support eco-friendliness and lower operating costs into the product mix.
The need for greater refrigerants stem from the fact that introducing a new refrigerant requires various changes to the infrastructure of the wider air conditioning market. Another factor remains on the topic of equipment, which is already out in the market, wherein studies says that the replacement of existing hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) equipment with alternative refrigerant systems would require approximately 10 years covering up completely.
The manufacturer is assessing a number of substances as next-generation refrigerants, which will help sustain the environment in the longer run. Refrigerants like HFC32, a type of HFC with relatively lover global warming potential (GWP); HFO refrigerants, which also demonstrates low global warning potential (GWP) but come with cost and stability issues; and non-HFC substances such as CO2 and propane; are the currently outlined refrigerants which are expected to forward the cause of refrigerants in the foreseeable future.
While refrigerants are many, at the present moment, HFC32 is considered to be the most promising substance for use as a next-generation refrigerant in both residential and commercial air conditioners.

BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
AUTOBOXX
UMAS 1.80 is an innovating system that automates/monitors utilities and man-power, based on client’s specific requirement. It is a cost-effective and state-of-the-art system with its own intelligence and comprises an embedded controller, remote gateway, central webbased applications, which are monitored through a 24×7 network operating and monitoring centre (NOMC).
The web-based application offers network administration, communication, centralised database storage, alarm processing, notification, reporting and controlling of utilities which leads to optimisation.

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC
The SE7000 series room controllers from Schneider Electric provide inputs and outputs for most HVAC applications, as well as relative humidity sensing options and built-in occupancy sensing capabilities for demand-based occupancy control. The PIR motion sensor and advanced occupancy algorithms open up new opportunities in smart energy management, ensuring maximum energy savings for unoccupied rooms at all times. Additional energy savings are obtained by automatically setting back the temperature to a standby mode when no motion is detected within a space.
Room controllers support several wired and wireless open communication protocols, including ZigBee Pro, BACnet, and LonWorks. Communication can also be implemented after deployment by adding small communication modules inside the room controllers.
Schneider Electric has also designed room controllers to seamlessly integrate into both SmartStruxure and SmartStruxure Lite solutions, as well as other Schneider Electric BMSs.

CARPETS
FORBO FLOORING
Marmoleum, Forbo’s brand of linoleum, stands for versatility, durability and sustainability. It is a natural floor created rom all natural ingredients and is the most sustainable floor in the resilient flooring category. Marmoleum floors include Topshield2, a double UV cured finish that results in the lowest costs of ownership over its life time. It is a natural floor made from 97% natural raw materials, 70% of which are rapidly renewable, along with a 43% recycled content. The key raw materials used in its production include linseed oil, which comes from the flax plant seeds, wood flour from controlled forests and jute, the natural backing onto which the linoleum is calendared.

MILLIKEN & COMPANY
Crafted of dense 40oz 100% wool, the Isos collection features wool loop and tip shear construction. Wool is natural, rapidly renewable, durable, long lasting, and flame retardant. 38% of the energy used in the manufacture of our carpet is renewable through company owned hydroelectric facilities and local landfill methane gas harvesting. The groundbreaking sustainable results include: Earth Square closed loop carpet recovery process; ES (engineered towards sustainability) backing system, featuring recycled content; and TractionBack adhesive free modular carpet installation system.

ECO-FRIENDLY FURNITURE
GODREJ INTERIO
WISH modular workstation adds to the feeling of expanse to office space and creates an impactful impression of added depth to the office. This contemporary concept is not only pleasing to the eye, but also highly flexible in nature.
WISH is designed so as to be able to fit into any office layout more creatively by utilising even fallow spaces such as columns into the design of the workspace layout. WIPRO
Wipro Furniture uses materials like steel or aluminium with high recycled content and thermo plastics that are completely recyclable. In fact, all the packing materials used are corrugated boards with recycled content. Wipro Furniture uses pre-laminated particle board for making work-tops and storage. The boards are manufactured using particles of wood from recycled agricultural fibre in the form of flakes, shavings and splinters. All these are from the plants with less than seven to eight years harvest cycle. Adhesives used for edge banding of boards have low VOC. It uses powder coating as metal finishing process which does not require any chemical solvents keeping the VOC contents close to zero.

FLOW AND FLUSH FIXTURES
SCHELL
Compact II WC concealed dual flushing system. The latest in WC flush systems from Schell is its hydraulic dual flush compact II WC concealed flushing system – a marked deviation in technology and operational mechanisms.
The hydraulic flush system for manual operations incorporate cutting-edge technology aimed towards water conservation, operating efficiency and easy maintenance.
Highly efficient in terms of water saving, the system is equipped with a dual flush mode. The main flush water volume can be scaled down to 4.5 litres to suit the new generation water saving WCs. The system fits snugly in a 6-inch finished wall. The equipment carries with it a unique self cleaning mechanism that ensures the closure of the flush mechanism with every flush operation. The product has a noise class I certification thereby reducing the noise of the flush below audible levels.

CERA
CERA pioneered water-saving twin flush
in India a little more than 15 years ago. The Campbell range of CERA consists of one-piece WC, two-piece floor mounting close-coupled WC set, two-piece wall-mounting close coupled WC set and wall mounting WC, was designed in-house by CERA’s team of designers. The company’s R&D has bagged green certification by IAPMO. Some of its other products have received a three-star rating for its water-saving feature.

GLASS
ASAHI INDIA GLASS
Ecosense is a range of high-performance glass in natural shades available as Enhance (solar control) and Exceed (solar control low-E). It is an amalgamation of energy efficiency and optimum day lighting that allows architects and builders to set a higher standard of green architect by:
• Allowing optimum light to pass through windows/facade while absorbing and reflecting away a large degree of the near range Infrared heat
• Keeping indoor spaces brighter and cooler.
A newly-formed strategic business unit, Solar Glass is AIS’ foray into the fast emerging solar glass segment in India.

SAINT GOBAIN
Saint-Gobain’s range of solar control glass, tinted glass and clear glass are ideal for use across the home. Clear glass from Saint-Gobain brings clarity, while tinted glass adds to the aesthetics with its attractive shades. Solar control glass for windows, canopies and skylights helps control heat penetration and allows optimum daylight to enter the interiors. It also provides summer comfort, UV protection besides saving on electricity cost. SGG Planilux (clear glass) & SGG Parsol (tinted glass) can be used for glass windows in locations where heat control is not a priority (other than tropical countries).

INSULATION
BAYER MATERIAL SCIENCE
Polyurethane insulation materials can reduce the energy consumption of buildings significantly and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Makrolon stands for light weight and transparent polycarbonate resins and PC-sheets that open up entirely different design solutions compared to glass elements. Polyurethane coating raw materials are ideal for durable coatings in high traffic areas of commercial and industrial buildings. Polyurethane adhesives raw materials for structural wood elements make it possible to use wood as a renewable construction material instead of heavier structural materials commonly used in the construction industry.

LLOYD INSULATIONS
Implementation of energy-efficiency in building systems is almost entirely dependent on effective thermal Insulation of the building envelope. Lloyd Insulations provide complete solutions for scientific thermal insulation of HVAC system elements like chilled water refrigerant lines, supply and return air ducting and air handling units to provide comprehensive energy efficiency to the built environment.
Under winter conditions, a hazard is the risk of condensation within the system. Detailing the insulation system design would involve proper placement of vapour retarder and attention to potential heat bridges and cold spots. Thermal insulation, by retarding heat flow, delivers the following benefits to a building enclosure: Helps maintain temperatures; reduces over-all cost of heating or cooling; keeps the temperature of the inner surfaces of buildings within acceptable limits to reduce possibility of their acting as “radiators”; and provides fire protection to metal structures.

LIGHTING
CROMPTON GREAVES
Crompton provides innovations in lighting in response to environmental challenges, focusing on issues like energy consumption and protecting natural resources from hazardous wastes. LEDs are safe light sources since they operate at low voltage thanks to their small size and innovative designs. They do not contain mercury or lead and are therefore perfectly eco-compatible.
Crompton’s independently reviewed life cycle assessment with equipped technological base shows that its GEN II LED fixtures help significantly in reducing environmental impacts with significantly lower energy consumption and much longer product lifetime. All their lighting products are in accordance with SIX SIGMA control ensuring highest quality standards.

NTL LEMNIS
The latest range of the aesthetically designed Pharox lamps has outpaced the conventional incandescent bulbs and CFLs in providing quality lighting. The lamps are energy-efficient and provide up to 90% energy savings and hence are high direction light output with less wastage of light.
NTL Lemnis’s energy-efficient recess mounted LED downlighter emit warm and pleasant white light. They have a special feature of lighting up without flickering. It has a system efficacy of >62 lm/W and are glare-free thus ensuring uniform light distribution. They have a wide operating voltage range from 110- 270 V AC at 50 Hz.

ROOFING
HINDALCO
Hindalco’s Everlast aluminium roofing and structurals epitomise one of aluminium’s outstanding properties as a building material – its lightness. They are about one third the weight of corrugated galvanised steel sheets and one seventh that of standard asbestos corrugated sheets, making it easy to install and ideal for roofing. They can withstand the harshest of climatic conditions. Being corrosion-resistant (when used with aluminium alloy accessories) these sheets offer unmatched protection for a lifetime. Hence, the sheets are used in aggressive and corrosive atmospheres in preference to galvanised steel. Aluminium is a green metal that’s extremely eco-friendly. It’s recyclable.

TATA BLUESCOPE STEEL
Tata BlueScope Steel’s Zincalume steel and Colorbond steel have environment friendly features such as reusability. Additionally because of Zincalume steel’s specific surface coatings it retains its bright surface for longer that means a higher reflecting surface which transfers lesser heat inside.
Colorbond steel with Thermatech Solar Reflectance technology helps lower surface temperature by reflecting more solar heat, thereby reducing the heat radiation travelling downwards into the building. In hot weather, it can reduce the temperature inside the building by up to 6’C. It can also reduce annual cooling energy consumption by up to 15%.
