Majuli Island protection proposal approved

The Planning Commission has given its financial clearance for the Rs115.99 crore project in Assam to protect Majuli Island from flood and erosion. The project is expected to be completed in this financial year.
The project involves protecting 22 satras and public/private properties and reconstructing roads and bridges, which usually get destroyed during floods. This will help in economic development and social upliftment of people living there. The tribal population, which is about 70 per cent of total population, would be the main beneficiary in terms of economic social development.
