L&T-Scomi bag India’s first monorail contract
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has approved a contract submitted by a consortium of Larsen and Toubro-Scomi Engineering for the first urban monorail in the city.
The contract worth 1.85 billion ringgit (Rs253 crore) is Scomi’s first overseas monorail contract as well as India’s first monorail system.
The monorail project will cover the design works, development, construction and commissioning and maintenance of the monorail system. The joint venture expects to complete the job in five years.
Work on the 19.54 kms monorail system is expected to begin in January 2009. The first 10-kms segment will be built between Jacob Circle and Wadala.
The 18-station route is scheduled to open less than 2-1/2 years after construction begins. The full 20 kms system will be complete in three years. The monorail is being implemented on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.
Scomi will run the monorail for the first three years.
Scomi Engineering, which is part of the oil services group Scomi Group Bhd, has also pre-qualified for a 20-25 km monorail line proposed for the Pune Metropolitan Region, India.
