Innovations in Coating Industry
Amit Hemrajani, director, MJ Coaters Pvt. Ltd, explains how the coating industry has evolved and the superior products the company has on offer.
What is the metal finishing contribution in Indian architectural coating scenario?
In the 1950s, metal finishing was established for liquid painting with primer and epoxy finish coat systems. This process
involved a lot of material wastages during coating, drying, environmental issues and durability in terms of quality. Later, anodizing as a metal pre-treatment was established as a low cost treatment for architectural coating for aluminium window frames. But anodizing has limitations of fading and color shade variations and is a hazardous process. In 1983, powder coating process was started and well established in terms of quality, durability, weather, chemical, and fire resistance, and environmental friendly as compared with liquid painting.
MJ Group established a powder coating plant in 1986 for industrial coating and was the first approved powder coating supplier for Siemens, which included Kansai Nerolac epoxy polyester and pure polyester powders in Siemens products.
The production capacity of this plant was 10,000 sq-ft/day. In 2004, MJ Coaters established a Powder coating/PVDF coating factory at Mahape with a capacity of 30,000 sq-ft/day. It has introduced first PVDF coating and super durable powder coating in India with 10 years warranty products in 2006.
Currently we at MJ group offer special coating like wood finish decorations, corten finish, and a variety of different patterns and textured finishes to the clients.
Can you tell us about emerging technologies that have a major impact on architectural coatings?
PVDF coating is a well established technology in architectural coatings and are perfect for processing aluminium profiles because they do not react with the majority of solvents and chemicals. In addition, they offer resistance to abrasions and wear, high dielectric strength, are resistant to weathering, and can extinguish themselves in the case of a fire. Other properties of PVDF include good colour retention and gloss and strong piezoelectricity.
The warranty offered for PVDF coating is 20 years. PVDF coating also offers metallic finish shades and is well
established in architectural coating industry and satisfies the AAMA 2605 standard which passes 4,000hrs of salt spray test.
Powders are available in super durable and Durosol grades which offer the 10-, 20-, 25- and 30-year warranties. MJ Coaters is an approved applicator for PVDF coatings for PPG Asian, AkzoNobel, Beckers and super durable powder coatings for Jotun, AkzoNobel for their product range.
How is the coating industry complying with green?
The pre-treatment chemicals and process used are approved
by “Qualicoat“ which is an international benchmark for coating industry. In terms of green, powder coating products are
offered without Trygleceroid (lead free).
What are company flagship products?
Metallic finish in powder coating and PVDF coatings, texture finish, anodising finish in powder coating, Bonded metallic, wood finish coating, corten finish are some of the key products of the MJ group.
We at MJ also conduct third party lab tests at national laboratories as per the requirement of projects.
