HUPA to help rebuild houses in Uttarakhand


The ministry of housing & urban poverty alleviation (HUPA) will help in planning, designing and reconstruction of devastated houses in Uttarakhand. The ministry will depute a technical team drawn from Housing & Urban Development Corporation Ltd. (HUDCO), Building Material and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC), Hindustan Prefab Limited (HPL). This technical team can further be augmented by experts from IIT Roorkee. This team will visit Uttarakhand soon to assess the damage due to the natural calamity.

Assuring the state government of Uttarakhand the full support of her Ministry, Dr Girija Vyas, minister, HUPA said that all affected municipalities and notified area councils in Uttarakhand can be covered under Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) as a special case to support reconstruction of houses of the poor and reconstruct and redevelop those devested houses. The government plans to rebuild around 10,000 houses under the RAY.

Dr Girija said that HUDCO has been instructed to provide long term soft loans of Rs3,000 crore for 18-20 years duration for construction of houses and for reconstruction of infrastructure facilities. She said that her ministry has also volunteered to coordinate the work of construction of houses under different funds/schemes of government of India. HUDCO under CSR, has contributed Rs1.25 crore for rehabilitation/ reconstruction works for the flood and landslide victims, she added.
