GST likely in Oct 2011: Member CBEC

Shri S Dutt Majumdar, Member (Central Excise), Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), has said that the Goods & Service Tax (GST) was likely to be introduced from October 2011 and hoped that all constitutional amendments shall be concluded for which all out efforts are on and the centre has been playing a pro-active role to strike a consensus approach on this issue with all states’ finance ministers.
He further said, government has requested the empowered committee of State Finance Ministry that by September end to finalize the co-ordinated view of the states on the suggested constitutional amendments. He was speaking at the 7th International Tax Conference organised by Assocham in New Delhi.
With GST in place, multiple taxation collection points as well as numerous tax authorities would be integrated in a manner that tax administrations and their distribution become equitable, fair and transparent, added Mr Majumdar. In his welcome remarks Assocham Sr VP, Shri Dilip Modi suggested early execution of DTC as well as GST with all issues relating to industry adequately addressed.
