Four foreign firms in fray for TN project

The Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) has shortlisted four foreign firms namely Garrad Hassan (UK), AWS Truewind, 3TIER (both US) and Denmark-based Risoe to run a pilot project on wind energy in Tamil Nadu (TN).
According to DV Giri, chairman of IWTMA, the focus of the project would be to demonstrate that wind energy can be forecastable with an accuracy of around 60-70%. Wind is difficult to forecast as it is affected by factors such as topography, ground cover and temperature inversions.
Elaborating on the reasons behind choosing the state to host the project, Giri revealed that TN generates 50% of wind energy in the country and had the potential to generate more. However inspite of favourable conditions, TN still buys power from external sources at a higher cost.
IWTMA plans to run the project, expected to be operational by September 2009, for one full wind season.
