Excellence honoured by Essar Steel

The inaugural ‘Essar Steel Infrastructure Excellence Awards’ commemorating the accomplishments of the finest players from the industry was a thundering success.

A lot needs to be done if we are to raise our existing infrastructure to world class standards. Moreover, it is equally critical to support and encourage the infrastructure sector if India is to emerge out of the current slump and enhance its economic progress.

Essar Steel recognises this and has been taking several initiatives towards this end. The institution of the ‘Essar Steel Infrastructure Excellence Awards’ – jointly initiated with CNBC TV18 and E18 – is a step ahead in this direction. These awards recognise and honour the contribution of infrastructure companies towards nation building.

The initiative was flagged off with ground events that attracted the nation’s attention to this key industry. Two ‘Essar Steel Infrastructure Network Forums’ – one on ‘Fast-Tracking Large Infrastructure Projects’ in Mumbai and another on ‘Infrastructure Policy and Planning’ in Delhi – were followed by the Infrastructure Conclave in Mumbai.

The conclave brought together some of the finest thought leaders from the industry.

An overwhelming response saw more than 110 projects getting nominated across categories. The short-listed entries were presented to a Jury comprising revered industry experts like Anwarul Hoda, member, Planning Commission; SS Kohli, CMD, IIFCL; Prof KT Ravindran, head, urban design, School of Planning & Architecture, Delhi; and Dr Mangesh Korgaonker, director general, NICMAR. A rigorous evaluation program was designed to select the best on the basis of overall excellence.

The awards night saw the who’s who of the industry rubbing shoulders to applaud the winners. The presence of dignitaries like Dr Kirit Parikh, member-Planning Commission; Rakesh Mehta, chief secretary, Govt of National Capital Territory of Delhi and SS Kohli, CMD, IIFCL added to the grandeur.

One of the golden moments of the glittering function was the unveiling of a coffee table book titled ‘Celebrating Indian Infrastructure’. This collector’s item showcases the best of Indian Infrastructure as it outlines the history of the sector and looks at the road ahead.
