Coal production registers healthy growth

Materials

India’s coal production has registered a healthy growth during the first half of the year. Coal production during the first half of the year (April-September,2009) has been 184.4 Million Tonnes showing an increase of 16.64 Million Tonnes over the previous year’s achievement of 167.8 Million Tonnes during the same period last year (2008-09) with a growth rate of 9.9%.
Amongst the Coal producing subsidiaries of CIL, NCL, SECL, BCCL, ECL & WCL have not only achieved the target but have also exceeded the targeted growth rate set for the first half. NCL has achieved production of 30.54 MT as against target of 29.89 MT.
It has also achieved an absolute growth of 2.54 MT thus achieving growth rate of 9.1% over the same period last year. Similarly SECL has achieved production of 48.43 MT against targeted production of 47.47 MT. It has also achieved an absolute growth of 2.06 MT over last year , thus achieving 4.4% growth rate over the same period last year.
BCCL has achieved coal production of 11.99 MT against target of 11.86 MT. It has achieved an absolute growth of 1.80 MT thus achieving the growth of 17.6% over the same period last year. ECL has achieved production of 12.42 MT as against target of 12.09 MT. It has also achieved an absolute growth of 0.99 MT thus achieving 8.6% over the same period last year.
WCL has achieved production of 21.16 MT as against target of 20.30 MT. It has also achieved an absolute growth of 0.81 MT thus achieving 4.0% growth rate. Two of the subsidiaries of Coal India Limited, CCL and MCL have not achieved the targeted production during the first half. However, these two companies have registered a growth rate of 25.1% and 13.2% respectively over the same period last year.
CCL has achieved production of 17.57 MT as against target of 20.16 MT. It has achieved an absolute growth of 3.52 MT thus achieving a growth rate of 25.1% over the same period last year.
MCL has achieved production of 42.03 MT as against target of 49.23 MT. It has also achieved an absolute growth of 4.90 MT which comes to achieving growth rate of 13.2% over the same period last year.
Off-take during the first half of this year has been 194.3 Million Tonnes which shows an increase of 8.1 Million Tonnes over the previous year’s achievement of 186.2 Million Tonnes, thus showing a growth of 4.3%.
Despatch to Power utilities during the year has been 140 Million Tonnes, 2 Millions Tonnes more (1.6 % growth) than the same period of the last year. The despatch could have been more but for deteriorating law & order situation at CCL and inadequate availability of wagon, particularly at Talcher Field of MCL.
In fact, during July and August, MCL received much less wagon at Talcher field in comparison to indents. Thus, in spite of having sufficient coal stock at pitheads, the constraints in logistics infrastructure affected desired growth in off-take.
Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd. (NLC), PSU under Ministry of Coal which has its headquarters at Neyveli in Tamil Nadu produced 21.31 million tonnes of lignite and also produced 15768 million units of power during the year 2008-09. NLC registered a turnover of Rs.3354.91 crore and recorded a Profit Before Tax of Rs. 1046.01 crore and a Profit After Tax of Rs. 821.09 crore for the year ended 31.3.2009.
NLC has paid a dividend amount of Rs. 313.93 crore for the year ended 31.3.2009 and the dividend cheque was handed over to Sriprakash Jaiswal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Coal, Statistics and Programme Implementation on 13.10.2009.
During the first half year (April-September, 2009) NLC has produced 11.48 million tonnes of lignite as against 10.25 million tonnes during the corresponding period of previous year registering a growth of 12%. The power generation is 9287 million units as against 7678 million units during the
corresponding period of previous year registering a growth of 21%.The first unit of 125 MW of NLC’s Barsingsar Thermal Power Plant in Rajasthan was lighted up on 15.09.2009 and is expected to be commissioned this month.
