New water treatment plant inaugurated in Kerala

A state-of-the-art water treatment plant was inaugurated today (May 18, 2010)  by Kerala Chief Minister VS Achutanandan at Aruvikkara, Thiruvananthapuram. The plant has been done by Degremont India, a joint venture between Degremont, France a world leader in water and waste water technologies, and the Anand Automotive Group, one of India’s leading manufacturers of automotive components and systems.
The treatment plant is designed to process 76 MLD of raw water from the Aruvikkara Reservoir on a 24 hours basis to deliver a minimum of 74 MLD treated water. The project has been executed by Degremont for Kerala Water Authority, which is responsible for setting up water treatment plants in various regions of Kerala under Kerala Water Supply Scheme.
Speaking on the inauguration of the plant, Jerome Labarre, Senior Vice President, Degremont said, “This Water Treatment Plant at Aruvikkara couples state of the art technologies on design, build and operate basis for the production of 74 million litre per day of high quality drinking water for the citizens of Trivandrum. This plant yet again re-affirms Degremont’s commitment to the public health & Safety.”
Degremont, the world leader in water treatment, has chosen the most apt and proven technology as per the specifics of the plant making it one of its finest plants, said a press release. The proven technology comprising of Sludge Blanket Pulsator type clarifiers and Rapid Sand Gravity filters of Aquazur-V type has been provided in the plant. This fully automatic SCADA enabled plant will ensure minimum loss of water from the plant with efficient use of power in the plant. The project has been sponsored by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).Â
