Digital transformation of power distribution

India Power Corporation (IPCL) is a leading Indian energy company offering a one-stop shop for power generation, distribution and renewable energy. The smart grid is a major focus area for the company, using Smart Meters and Internet of Things (IoT) devices in digital transformation initiatives. Offering such digital services to other power companies is a long-term strategy.

Another key move in the IPCL digital journey is the adoption of SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to improve reporting and analytics and run IoT apps in the distribution network. To take full advantage of those ERP innovations, IPCL planned a transition from its legacy on-premise data centre to the greater agility and scalability of the cloud.

IZO Private Cloud: sound choice
The search for a hosting partner led IPCL to select IZO™ Private Cloud from Tata Communications. The strength of the Tata Communications brand along with the quality and scalability of its international-standard data centres were critical deciding factors. Meanwhile, only Tata Communications guaranteed a 99.5% availability SLA compared to its competitors.

Another key influencer was the end-to-end managed service that IZO™ Private Cloud offers with compute, storage, disaster recovery, firewalls and network services.

The Tata Communications team has optimised the IZO Private Cloud platform to exactly meet the compute and storage needs of IPCL without costly overprovision. That couldn’t be achieved with the previous on-premise data centre arrangement.

Cloud performance underpins the implementation of digital and IoT services for a superlative customer experience, reflecting the company’s passion for continuous change. Such digital apps breed vast volumes of data and IZO Private Cloud assures the scalability to cope. An on-premise hardware solution couldn’t offer the same flexibility and would waste vast amounts of CapEx in trying.

Apart from the SAP software, the IZO Private Cloud solution is running other corporate apps like BI tools and IoT cloud. The compute and storage agility provided by Tata Communications enables innovations like mobile apps and a customer portal. That’s a massive hit with both internal and external customers who use it for intelligent reports, billing and service-related queries.

“Our business is power generation and distribution, not the relentless management of hosted services. For the latter we rely on Tata Communications, who offer best-in-class hosting infrastructure and expertise.” Sanjeev Sinha, president, IT and digitisation, IPCL.

Scalability tells its own story when it comes to service and support. One weekend the billing cycle froze because the SAP database had bust its limits. An emergency call to the Tata Communications account team liberated extra storage capacity. By Monday everything was back to normal. Most importantly, customers never even noticed any impact on application performance and availability.
