How formwork is creating waves with innovation

Considering the benefits that formwork brings, it is certain that its demand will only continue to shoot upwards

The entry of several scaffolding and formwork multinationals into Indian market in the recent past, has revolutionised the way we used to construct few years ago. Few Indian manufacturers have also introduced innovative products and systems which are affordable and one stop solution provider for all construction related problems. But it is vital to select the appropriate and right formwork solutions and their service provider. These days, most of them are offering best of their services and cost effective scaffolding and formwork solutions.

In today’s competitive market, contractors and builders are facing tough competitions which necessitates most economic formwork and scaffolding solutions and also offer speed, safety of workers and most importantly quality to keep them a step ahead in business.

Raj Lakhani, MD, PERI (India), says, “India is expected to become the third largest construction market globally by 2022. Rapid growth of urbanisation, major investments in infrastructure segment will drive the Indian construction market. With such growth prospects across construction segments, we see many opportunities in Indian formwork market and it will continue to grow in coming years.”

Innovations in any industry doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time, to understand a product and desire to take it to the next level of excellence. With the government laying special emphasis on construction and infrastructural development, opportunities abound in the Indian scaffolding and formwork (S&F) industry. Yet, there are some challenges like time and cost constraints. Moreover, the general paucity of trained professionals in this field is also a cause for concern. Nevertheless, with the demand rising in the wake of ongoing and future projects, S&F manufacturers are keeping pace with the construction industry.

Making it large
The reasons for growth are aplenty. Firstly, the speed and uncertainty with which projects are awarded these days, a contractor has no choice but to ensure a quick completion and move on to the next one. Secondly, S&F provides qualitative consistency in construction besides good surface finish, thereby saving a lot of finishing time and plastering material. Furthermore, the usage of conventional scaffolding material is diminishing as labour safety is gaining considerable importance in India. And finally, S&F solutions have a longer life and can be re-used at various sites, thus resulting in cost savings for the contractor.

Surajit Ray, MD, Ulma Formwork Systems India, says, “The construction sector has always been the main driving force for the Indian economy. Recent initiative by the government of India has given impetuous to the infrastructure sector. There have been upsurge in the demand for residential and mainly commercial spaces in select areas of various status. Technically approved certified formwork systems are being specified by consultants and architects to induce speed yet maintain high standards of construction safety and quality for Infrastructure, civil and building projects.  In a nutshell, factors like speed, safety and technical integrity are governing the Indian formwork market.”

PERI India has grown its footprints across all construction segments in India. With landmark projects such as Mahatma Mandir, Statue of Unity, ITPO, ITC Colombo One, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Surat Diamond Bourse, Hyderabad Metro, Bengaluru metro, etc., its state-of-art formwork and scaffolding system has proved its mettle in delivering customised solutions for every complex need in a cost effective manner.

Lakhani says, “Statue of Unity is one of our prestigious project executed in India and demonstrates our engineering capability for complex project needs. PERI was the exclusive partner for formwork for the project. Combination of RCS rail climbing units and ACS self climbing unit was used in the construction of the project. PERI supplied 24 RCS rail climbing units and one ACS self-climbing unit for faster and crane independent construction of elliptical core. The core walls starts from the feet of the statute structure reaching to the shoulder of the structure.”

ULMA has recently developed a new flex slab formwork system known as ONADEK. It is a formwork system made of galvanised steel members with high assembly performance and maximum flexibility designed for the residential & commercial building construction industry. “Ray says, “It’s capable of forming any type of slab with complex geometries where there are drop beams, columns or load-bearing walls. It is composed of lightweight, durable and easy to handle metal beams supported on drop heads. Drop heads enable early and safe recovery of the formwork members keeping intact slab supports in place. It helps achieve a fast working pace with less labour and material.”

Innovative formwork is finding acceptance.

PERI has launched quite few innovative formwork and scaffolding technologies in India in last few years. PERI DUO is an excellent example of PERI’s capability of innovation in formwork technology. PERI DUO, a universal application formwork system (single system for walls, foundations, columns and slabs) is a latest innovation in formwork industry in India. It is seen as a potential replacement for the conventional formwork. Ergonomic in all aspects, it offers time and labor cost saving, along with high flexibility. The system ensures high productivity and reduces requirement for skilled labor on site. Being a lightweight formwork system, it is crane independent and has intuitive application. The formwork is manufactured from robust techno polymer and offers virtually tool-free assembly. Techno polymers are shrink free, develop no moisture expansion and do not rust. All these features make the DUO formwork system very beneficial when compared to conventional formwork systems, as they not only enhance the life of the product but also ensure maximum repetition.

Every civil structure demands different formwork solution. Slabs with varying thickness require a combination of modular and conventional system formwork as the identical solution for curved slabs or with irregular geometry.
