BHEL moves to counter Chinese threat

In a bid to counter increasing competition from Chinese players, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is said to be lobbying hard with the government to impose a 15% duty on imported power generating equipment.

Chinese power equipment companies have bagged orders worth Rs18,000 crore from India in the past few years.

Companies such as Dongfang Electric, Shanghai Electric and Harbin Power Equipment have already supplied equipment to the West Bengal government, Anil Ambani’s Reliance Energy and Anil Agarwal’s Sterlite, as their power equipment is cheaper than that of domestic players.
