Afcons bags two orders for Chennai Metro project
Afcons Infrastructure-led consortium has secured two major metro projects in Chennai, amounting to Rs2598 crore. A group company of Shapoorji Pallonji, Afcons had formed a joint venture with Russian giant Transtonnelstroy Limited to secure the order.
In an integrated joint venture with the Russian giant Transtonnelstroy Limited, Afcons Infrastructure Limited, a group company of Shapoorji Pallonji, has successively secured two landmark metro projects in Chennai, amounting to Rs. 2598 crore.
The two project contracts—UAA01 and UAA05 with value of Rs1567 crore and Rs1031 crore respectively, fall under 1 and 2 corridors of Chennai Metro Project, covering respective lengths from Washermenpet to Egmore station and from Shenoy Nagar to Thiurmangalam station. With 5 & 4 underground stations for UAA01 & UAA05 respectively, the length of twin tunnel with TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) technique for UAA01 & UAA05 is 5.5 km & 3.1 km respectively.
These projects are part of the tenders floated by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited for design and construction of underground stations and associated tunnels covering a total length of 8.6 kms and 9 underground stations. The construction works are likely to take off by mid-February 2011 and will be completed by end of April, 2015, the company said.
Ramakrishna V Ramanan, Director Transportation Afcons Infrastructure Limited, said, “We are very happy to get ourselves associated with the Chennai Metro Rail project. The bagging of the project has given us yet another opportunity to showcase our skill-set and engineering expertise in executing critical infrastructure projects such as Metro Rail in the development of the nation.”
He said that Afcons has been one of the key partners in Delhi Metro as it has completed seven jobs for them. “Similarly we are currently executing the first underwater metro tunnel below Hoogly river in Kolkata for Kolkata Metro. Now we are proud and privileged to have such an important association with Chennai Metro” Ramanan added.
Chennai Metro Project is rapid transit rail system to be implemented in phase manner. The phase 1 consists of two Corridors under construction. Corridor 1 is from Meddavaram to St. Thomas Mount and Corridor 2 is from Madhavaram to Lighthouse via Radhakrishnan Salai. About 55% of corridors in Phase 1 are underground and balance is elevated.
