A building façade is required to be attractive, but the façade isn’t just an aesthetic element; it’s an essential parameter for building performance. Façade form an integral part of building aesthetic as well as building performance.
Over the years, engineers have created different types of façades with various materials. Until now, stainless steel façades have primarily been used in large buildings. Innovative developments in processing technology make stainless steel façades attractive even for smaller buildings. Combinations with wood, concrete, masonry or coated steel sheets open up a multitude of new design possibilities. Stainless steel can also be used efficiently for façades with technical functions such as light control, shading or electromagnetic shielding.

This campus is designed on the green building concept, principally designed by NBBJ (USA) and worked out accordingly. It has got Platinum LEED rating. With a total area of 3 mn sq-ft, it is the biggest SEZ campus of this kind in Bangalore. This is built by using materials that will not be hazardous in future and can pollute the atmosphere or life. Materials such as aluminium, glass, mild steel, stainless steel and other elements are used for internal or external façade work or base building. The campus has two rows facing each other and in the middle there are many spine canopies and concourse with beautiful landscaping. As far as façade is concerned, it is designed considering the LEED requirement and maintenance. It has got high-performance glass, super durable D2000 series powder coated solid aluminum sheet which are used for structural glazing and cladding. Ceiling is done with wooden finish baffles and solid aluminum sheet. The buildings have entrance canopy in front and rear side as well, under which automatic sliding doors are functioning. The campus has got few bus shelters and canopy, cladded by solid aluminum sheet. Each building has beautifully designed circular atrium having top covered with skylight. The atrium system is designed in such a way in case of maintenance work, we need not go outside.
Bulgari Resort Dubai

The Bulgari Resort Dubai is one of six exquisite hotels and resorts from the Italian luxury goods brand. Situated on Jumeirah Bay, a man-made island shaped like a seahorse, the sunny property is a sophisticated design from Milan-based architectural firm Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, for Meraas Development. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of this 52,000m² development is the façade’s coral-pattern sunscreens that cast intricate shadows onto the main building and complement the elaborate balcony design. They guard overlapping wooden terraces that open the resort up to sensational views.
Expressing the theme of ‘Mediterranean village’, Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel presents a luxury complex that comprises 101 rooms and suites as well as 20 villas on the shoreline with private pools and beachfront terraces. Each room comes with designer touches such as vintage trunk minibars, handcrafted Italian furniture and silk-covered walls.
The Bulgari Resort Dubai boasts a range of amenities, including Il Ristorante by Niko Romito; a characteristic oval bar; a chocolate boutique; spa, pool and fitness facilities; and the exclusive La Spiaggia beach. Rare materials like Iranian green onyx and Mongolian black granite are used throughout the interior, complemented by displays of Bulgari pieces and nautical artworks. Lavish gardens with Mediterranean vegetation surround the resort.
AluK is proud to have been part of this project’s success: AluK’s aluminium building systems were specified, including windows, doors, and lift and slide doors. These enable residents and visitors to enjoy spectacular views of the exotic city.
KAI Early Years, International Preschool

Built environment in urban areas has a lot to do with a child’s growing up years. A school has to trigger a child’s curiosity and facilitate organic learning in an unhindered manner. Kai Early Years is a new age school that knows both the objectives can be achieved if a suitable environment is consciously created.
So, that was the brief from the school’s promoters to Education Design Architects (EDA), the renowned architect firm on the project that specialises in education facility design.
The architect team’s design plan envisioned building a fluid, curvilinear shaped structure, accentuated with curved window trims, entry canopies, shading devices and skylights. The intent was to initiate free flowing thought and movement, and set the child’s mind free.
While the curvilinear structure is accomplished with cement, it needed to be humanised with a sustainable element to give the building a warm and inviting feel. So, the upper part of the building is enveloped with a façade comprising exterior grade FunderMax 0922 range of wood-colored HPL panels. The seamless and smooth façade faithfully replicated the curved cement structure.
The team narrowed down on FunderMax panels for the all-weather ruggedness, low maintenance, longevity and the insulation it provided. The sustainability thought extended into many other aspects of the building like rainwater harvesting, low flow plumbing and high-performance glass to minimise heat gain.
At Kalpataru, we use wind tunnel testing as a tool to get accurate results to enhance safety of projects, minimise assumptions and enable maximum design freedom to architects. We have used wind tunnel testing across projects and the principle and its analysis have laid the foundation for project design.
The advantages of cladding in the façade of Kalpataru Avana are multi-faceted, including creating a controlled internal environment, protecting the building from external conditions, providing thermal insulation and improving the appearance of the building. The claddings are done with Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP), which can withstand extreme weather conditions and protect and ensure comfort of residents. The ACP cladding comprises of durable panels that last for several years and are thus economical in the long run.
Buildings are often susceptible to fire. Aluminum, being a non-combustible material, is safe to be used in the construction process. Fire Retardant ACPs do not release toxic gases in case of fire, which prevents health hazard due to inhalation of toxic fumes and is also environment friendly. At Kalpataru Avana at Parel, we have used Alubond USA which is one of most trusted global names for aluminum composite panels.

Location: Navi Mumbai
Glass Wall Systems handed over the project to its client with a certificate of quality and good engineering product installation. The project had many challenges in terms of height, wind pressure, and other various aspects. However, all efforts paid off when people saw the final results and the customer’s satisfaction. It’s the tallest building in Navi Mumbai.
As India’s largest façade engineering company, Glass Wall Systems customized the product in terms of design and engineering as per the project requirement. The team also satisfied the architect’s intent and views. New elements of terracota tile cladding and cable net system at the entrance lobby lends a different charm to the project. This development & installation of product is done inhouse using experts who could handle such a delicate task.
The other scope of work included unitised curtain wall system, glass railing, aluminium metal cladding, among other things.
It’s a 32-storey commercial project with façade area of 36,000+ m2, which is mainly spread over the tower and entrance area.

Rupa Renaissance is a 1.8 million sq-ft IT Park in Turbhe, Navi Mumbai. A composite steel structure that is enabled to be future-ready and way ahead of time in the construction sector of India.
Usually in a glass facade building, most buildings have vertical grid, and the glass division is typically divided 1100mm to 1500mm width. In this project, the architect visualised horizontal grid lines with a panel width of 2400mm. So the panel size was almost double than the regular facade size which is usually 1200mm x 4000mm. Here the facade panel size was double 2400x4000mm. With five horizontal divisions of glass, each panel size was 9.6m2, along with a horizontal fin of 900mm.
3D Megastructure has installed of approx 3000 panels of such huge size in record time which was a big challenge.
The fabrication and installation of approx 3000 panels of such huge size was a big challenge. Since the performance requirements were high, we had to adhere to 1000pa water tightness, 600pa air tightness and wind load more than 2.4kpa.
The entire project is supported techno-commercially by Schueco India as system supplier & co-ordinated, fabricated & installed by 3 D Megastructures with great precision & utmost care.
Due to high performance requirement of project Schueco has proposed UCC 65 SG unitised façade, in this system 2nd chamber is dry chamber which gives high performance in water tightness and looks impressive on the outside, 2nd challenge was offering solution for openable of such a large size, to encounter that requirement Schüco has proposed AWS 114 windows series.
Besides this, some of the prime factors of this installations are as under :
■ Dead wall covered with terracotta tiles
■ Horizontal fins protruding towards outside by 900mm with LED light with staggered fittings was a real challenge to us.
■ Restrain pins are installed for cleaning support as BMU
■ Duct area is covered with linear vertical louvers
■ Wide openable sizes of windows having 2440 mm width X 825 mm height
■ Zig zag shaped frameless railings at podium level
■ Widest & tallest building in the vicinity of the area at prime landmark location.
One of the important aspects of this installation is functional optimization of facade, value engineering with optimal energy saving with visual comfort aesthetics.
