India and Japan are in the process of signing a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) to exchange technical knowledge and expertise in the field of road transport and highways. Recently, Japan’s minister for land, infrastructure, transport and tourism (MLITT), Takeshi Maeda had a meeting with India’s counterpart Dr CP Joshi to finalise the MOC.
The agreement will help both the countries build better roads using advanced technology and intelligent transport system.
Japanese companies have been participating in India’s National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) as a ‘supervision consultants’. They have already completed four projects together. India is also a beneficiary of Japanese cooperation through Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Both countries had recently issued a joint statement during Japan Prime Minister’s visit to India, recognising the bilateral co-operation in the infrastructure sector including cooperation in the development of expressways in India and capacity building.
