The index of mineral production of mining and quarrying sector in May 2011 was higher by 1.83% compared to that of the preceding month. However the mineral sector has shown a positive growth of 1.36% during May 2011 as compared to that of the corresponding month of previous year.
The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during May 2011 was Rs15970 crore. The contribution of petroleum (crude) was the highest at Rs5401 crore (34%). Next in the order of importance were: Coal- Rs3994 crore, Iron Ore- Rs3758 crore, Natural Gas (utilized) Rs1260 crore, Lignite Rs426 crore and Limestone Rs300 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 95% of the total value of mineral production in May 2011.
Production level of important minerals in May 2011 were: Coal 413 lakh tonnes, Lignite 42 lakh tonnes, Natural Gas (utilized) 4079 million cu.m., Petroleum (crude) 32 lakh tonnes, Bauxite 1298 thousand tonnes, Chromite 422 thousand tonnes, Copper conc. 11 thousand tonnes, Gold 220 kg., Iron Ore 187 lakh tonnes, Lead conc. 11 thousand tonnes, Manganese Ore 235 thousand tonnes, Zinc conc. 97 thousand tonnes, Apatite & Phosphorite 198 thousand tonnes, Dolomite 421 thousand tonnes, Limestone 222 lakh tonnes, Magnesite 19 thousand tonnes and Diamond 27 carat.
