The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), an international organization dedicated to the advancement of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration, has appointed Ashok K Virmani as Director and Regional Chair for the Region-at-Large (which includes the Middle East, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Africa and Europe). In his current role, Ashok will be responsible for working closely with developing economies and helping transform ASHRAE into a more globally inclusive organization. Ashok will serve a three-year term from 2011–14.
Ashok joined ASHRAE in 1990, served as AIC Chapter President in 1994–5 and has received the John F James International Award, the Regional Award of Merit, the Chapter Service Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. Trained as a Mechanical Engineer, Ashok was the founding partner and Managing Director of Suvidha Engineers India Private Limited, a contracting, manufacturing and agency business that today generates annual revenues of over US $ 72 million. Ashok is a Promoter Director of TAB Air Systems and an independent Director at Eco Auto Components Limited.
Commenting on his new position, Ashok said: ‘ASHRAE, while present globally, is not yet truly internationalized. This presents an important area of potential growth and opportunity for the organization. Underdeveloped and developing economies experience severe economic, educational and technical limitations. ASHRAE believes that it can make a valuable contribution to several Asian and other countries, further internationalizing its own vision and operations in the process. The task before me is an exciting and challenging one, and I look forward to helping ASHRAE achieve its mission.’
