Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC) is launching Green Rating for the major streams of Infrastructure Construction. Construction of Physical
Infrastructure, Involves constructing following: (1) Buildings (2) Bridges (3) Roads (4) Power Plants (5) Dams & Irrigation Structures (6) Urban Infrastructure (7) Medium Industry (8) Mineral Plants (9) Transmission (10) Maintenance.
It is noteworthy that Construction activities consume a substantial amount of energy & therefore need to be rated for the environment friendly construction materials, construction practices & designs. The current green ratings are being awarded, are only for buildings, & do not cover other streams of physical infrastructure. Further the exiting rating systems, do not take in cognizance the embodied energy, having being consumed while constructing the structures.
In case of several buildings rated as “Green”, the materials used have large embodied energy, thus making the rating subject to review.
Further, the work philosophy of Green Rating, as is in vogue, only focuses the attention on minimizing recurring energy consumption on account of HVAC & lighting, not accounting for vast quantum of energy embodied in the structure. CIDC, Green Rating shall give a holistic picture, where the real environment- friendliness can be evaluated. The evaluation of embodied energy shall be done using an Energy Consumption Schedule, prepared by CIDC for over 450 items & activities of work. CIDC is the apex organization established by the Planning Commission, Government of India.
