The eighth edition of the Green Building Congress was held from October 5-9, 2010 at Chennai, India. This annual event has been institutionalized by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), as part of its strategies to promote Green Building concepts in the country. It is held in different cities since 2001.
Objective
The objective of Green Building Congress is to generate awareness, enrich & network, learn more on the latest and emerging green technologies and update all the stakeholders on the global green building scenario and encourage them to get involved in the green building movement.
Focus
This year’s event focused on several important issues including Architectural perspectives in Green Buildings, National and international experiences on Green Building concepts, Green Building Movement- global trends, Case studies on Green Buildings- national and international, Green Building Rating Systems, Green Building materials, equipment & technologies and Public Policies.

Key happenings
The event was marked by an International Conference, an Exhibition on Green Building Products & Technologies, a Conference on Green Homes & Green SEZ, Training Programme and the Green Building Mission.
Australian Government was the Country Partner and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) was the Knowledge Partner for the event.
The inaugural session of the international conference was held on October 7, 2010 and the inaugural session was addressed by the stalwarts of the global green building movement.
On the same day, an MoU was inked between IGBC and GBCA for Research Collaboration for Carbon Offset in Building Sector and with USGBC for LEED Agreement.
The exhibition
At the three-day international exhibition held from 7-9 October 2010, over 200 green building product and technologies were displayed and over 6,500 visitors got a first hand understanding on the latest and emerging green building products and technologies.
Awards
At the inaugural session, awards were presented to the winners of Green-I Contest and IGBC Green Design Contest.
Green-I Contest 2010: The theme for this year’s contest was: How to build a Green Centre in your school as organically as possible?
Daly College, Indore was awarded with the first prize and was presented Rs7.5 lakh to implement the idea in their school campus and build a Green Centre in their school. The contest was supported by Carrier Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Ltd.
IGBC Green Design Architectural Award: IGBC Green Design Architectural competition was organised for architectural students across the country aiming at imbibing principles, information &knowledge that would pave way for a greener tomorrow. Anuj Mittal and Kabilan S of School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi were awarded the first prize. The Competition was supported by Blue Star Ltd.
Conference on Green Homes and Green SEZ
A one-day conference on green homes and green SEZ was organised on 09 October 2010.
The objectives of the Conference included Creating awareness on green homes & green SEZ, Exposing the participants to the latest global trends, Exhibiting green building products & technologies, Providing a platform for networking, Facilitating exploration of new business opportunities and Enabling market transformation of green products & equipment.
Training Programmes and Workshop
The Congress was also marked by trainings programmes, workshop and Green Building Mission. Advanced training programme on green buildings, October 5-6: The main objective of the training programme was to share best practices on Green Buildings and impart knowledge on Green Building concepts & LEED India NC rating system.
Workshop
On Building Energy Simulation – EnergyPlus, October 5-6: It aimed to enable participants to be able to use EnergyPlus to model physical buildings and solve practical problems.
Green Building Mission
As part of Green Building Mission, green building visits were organised to L&T EDRC (LEED Silver) and FLSmidth (LEED INDIA NC Gold) on October 6 and 9 respectively. Participants were escorted on the building tour and were briefed on the eco friendly and sustainable features of the buildings.
