With availability of India specific products like the BSS 46, the boom pump market in India definitely has a bright future.
Till the recent past, Indian construction companies faced a lot of difficulty in getting bigger boom pumps if their projects needed such pumps. They had to import these boom pumps and the imported pumps were allowed to stay in India only till the completion of the project. Once the project got over, they had to be sent back.
New segment opened
Keeping the above scenario in mind, Putzmeister India opened up the segment of larger boom pumps in the Indian market by launching BSS 46 which is India’s biggest and only 46m trailer mounted boom pump. This pump can be mounted on a homologated trailer which is allowed to run on Indian roads. With trailer configuration, it has opened the era of higher reach boom pumps in India which till now were restricted because of non-availability of bigger truck chassis.
Specially designed according to existing Indian road regulations, the BSS 46 can also be pulled by a tractor. Hence, a contractor does not need special permission to move this machine as most contractors have tractors. This also reduces the initial investment. The unit has been designed in such a way that any make of tractor can be used to pull it.
The pump is equipped with five arms for better reach and manoeuvrability. It has a maximum vertical reach of 45.1m (148ft) and horizontal reach of 41.1m (134ft). It is also equipped with a 140 cum/hr core. Another feature of this pump is the slave engine of 190 KW Volvo Penta, which is very fuel efficient.
An economic output control system can adjust the engine’s RPM according to the load on the machine resulting in higher fuel efficiency. Moreover, the RZ-folding Technology of BSS 46 is quite advanced. It helps in quick erection of the boom, and concrete pouring can start immediately.
Besides regular construction applications, this pump is also very suitable for infrastructure projects like LNG tanks, chimneys, power plants, etc.
Onsite
BSS 46 is currently working on the site of a residential project being developed by Unitech Developers (see opening picture). Located at sector-33 in Gurgaon (Haryana), the project is being built by Unibild Engineering & Construction Co, a sister concern of Unitech. Unibild has been using Putzmeister machines for its various projects and is happy to acquire the largest boom pump in India for its project, according to Praveen Gurnani, MD of the company.
Market scenario
Speaking about the boom pump market in India, Michael Schmid-Lindenmayer, Managing Director, Putzmeister India said, “Although it is difficult to tell the exact market size, we estimate it to be roughly close to 100 units last year. Putzmeister is currently leading the market with more than half of the market share. We already have a population of over 100 truck pumps working on different projects all across India.
We expect this market to grow very fast in the coming time in India.” Mr Schmid-Lindenmayer also added that the Indian market is still a trailer pump market while in rest of the world boom pumps are used for majority of the applications. But due to a demand in productivity, quality and safety, this situation is changing very fast in India. “The Indian market is growing strongly and we believe that Asia is the future if we look at the main construction activity,” he remarked.
