India and UK look to strengthen their economic ties, especially in the field of infrastructure, power and manpower training besides others. The UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s first official India visit along with his cabinet colleagues is seen as major such move to explore opportunities of mutual interests. Indian Commerce & Industry Minister, Anand Sharma called for greater participation from UK in building infrastructure in India.
“We have huge demands of infrastructure, and all projections indicate that we will be in a position to absorb US$1.7 trillion in infrastructure over the next decade,” Sharma said at an interactive UK-India Economic discussion in New Delhi. He said British companies have established expertise in building world-class infrastructure, and India will look forward to greater partnership, greater collaboration and assistance in this endeavour.
Also, in the field of human resource development, UK can contribute considerably as India is likely to add 500 million people in the workforce in the next decade. “The imperative of training them and making them equipped is an area where partnership with UK will be mutually rewarding,” he added during the conference.
Among the other areas of interest, government feels, industrial energy is something where both the countries can collaborate. India and UK both discussed the issue of industrial energy efficiency, and considered areas where bilateral collaboration could help inform analysis and future work on both sides for mutual benefit.
