James Rajan, VP Services, Wartsila India added "Through innovative products and services, we set out to be the most valued business partner of all our customers. We support our customers throughout the lifecycle of their installations by optimizing efficiency and performance by providing the broadest portfolio and best services in the industry for both ship power and power plants. Wartsila India is a thought leader in the power sector and has been instrumental in changing the dynamics of the industry in India. Recently, the company had commissioned a study titled 'Optimal Power Generation Mix for India: Addressing Sustainability and Peak Power Demand Management' to determine the optimum generation mix for India, where large coal based power plants can be supplemented with gas based distributed power plants for 24x7 power availability in a sustainable manner.
Two scenarios are envisaged: an 'as is' scenario where growth in generating capacity is predominantly through the addition of baseload plants, and an alternative scenario based on a mix of Base Load generation and High Efficiency, High Flexibility, Distributed Power (HEHFDP) peaking plants with their inherent operational flexibility. These HEHFDPs instead of working out of a central location are strategically located near the consumption centres.
The study showed that creating an optimal generation mix to meet peak demand vis-a-vis an 'as is' generation mix would deliver savings in five key areas: efficiency, carbon emissions, land usage, water consumption and capital expenditure.
The company had earlier conducted a pan-India study on the 'Real Cost of Power' which estimates that Rs1,00,000 crore has been invested on power back-up equipment so far, while an additional Rs. 30,000 Crore is spent every year as operational expense on generating back-up power. The report specified that while initiatives such as the setting up of Ultra Mega Power Plants will, hopefully, help in adding base load capacities in the country, it is about time to look at other complementary technologies and solutions to impart much-needed flexibility into the system and to improve peak-load management.
Wartsila is a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets. By emphasising technological innovation and total efficiency, Wärtsilä maximises the environmental and economic performance of the vessels and power plants of its customers.
