Mr. Darda was satisfied with the progress being done at the port and said, "Development of port will not only promote import and export of cargo but will also lead to industrial growth in the region and generate employment. Maharashtra has a very good coastline and in view of the industrial growth and productivity, the development of port sector is very vital for smooth movement of cargo.
The Maharashtra government is keen on development of Konkan region and that is the reason I am visiting Konkan region and MIDC areas in and around the port. Industrial growth will only bring much needed employment in all sections of the society."
Vijay G Kalantri, Chairman & Managing Director of Dighi Port Ltd said, "Over 600 people directly or indirectly have been employed at the North and South Bank
of the Port. The Port shall initially commence three berths by 2010 and five berths by 2011.
The first berth will be commenced in the next month. Dighi Port will initially handle 30 million tonnes of cargo and will cater to the needs of industries in Maharashtra and surrounding areas. It will also be a gateway to Maharashtra." Mr Darda was accompanied by Dr K Shivaji, CEO, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Radheshyam Mopalwar, Jt CEO of MIDC, Subhash Sonawne, Collector, Raigad and various other officers.
