The Trivandrum Centre of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Kerala Chapter, is organising a three-day-long exhibition of building materials, architecture, interiors, builders and home loans. Titled Design World 2010, the expo is being held this month at St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, General Hospital Junction, Thiruvananthapuram.

Design World 2010 focuses on Inclusive Built Environment. Calling it one of the newest concepts being debated in contemporary architecture circuits, Prof J Jayakumar, chairman, Trivandrum Centre of IIA, pointed out that it is slightly different from the more well-known ones such as Accessible Environment as it focuses on the necessities of a wider group of individuals who would need to use public amenities – including children, the aged and less able-bodied people such as the sick, the infirm or the temporarily disabled.

The IIA Kerala Chapter has been actively propagating the concept of ‘Green Architecture’ for the past two years; and the
new concept is meant to be an extension of the same, an attempt to bring in a human element.

Simple daily tasks like crossing the road, walking on the footpath or negotiating the steps or staircases in buildings become risky affairs for children or the aged without the supervision and support of others.

Addressing the urgent need to bring together Architecture and Urban Planning so as to offer solutions to the haphazard built environments found
in our urban areas, this topic covers a large area
of urban designing, including roads, public buildings, etc.

Design World 2010 aims to sensitise the public as well as the architects and designers community on this issue – so the discussions, debates and seminars focus attention on key issues: inclusive built environment, city development and the construction sector.

The construction of
low-cost houses, effective space utilisation to incorporate more facilities, avoiding wastage of space inside houses, making houses more utilitarian, renovation of old houses and getting the service of architects in general, are other themes being explored at the expo.
