Despite the initial hiccups, bauma lived up to its expectations

Construction Week presents a review of this year’s bauma including a very interesting list of top fifteen products showcased at this leading fair

Bauma reflections

While the volcanic ash eruptions initially cast serious doubts over the success of this time’s bauma, the situation changed after the ban on air travel was lifted. The change was quite positive and as a result bauma marked a turnaround in the international construction machinery industry, bringing in the much required change in sentiment.

“Of course at the start of the fair the exhibitors felt the lack of many customers from Asia and America – but in the second half of bauma, this improved considerably. Messe Muenchen’s crisis management in the days impacted by volcanic ash was outstanding,” said Ralf Wezel, Secretary-General of CECE, the Committee for European Construction Equipment, summing up this year’s bauma.

Although the ban on air travel in Europe prevented many visitors and around 50 exhibitors from overseas from coming to the fair, the mood at the venue amongst the approximately 3,150 registered exhibitors from 53 countries was good by the close of the fair. Already by the mid-way point of the fair a number of exhibitors were reporting more sales than they had expected. “The preparation and organisation of the trade fair was very well done. As we participated for the first time at bauma in Munich the support was very helpful. Our expectations and objectives for this fair have been more than fulfilled. We see this fair as a leading fair to develop our business mainly in Europe,” remarked Abhijeet Pai, Director, Puzzolana Group.

The representative survey of exhibitors conducted by TNS Infratest showed that bauma 2010 marked a change in mood following a year of crisis in 2009, and that this change is being felt in many international markets, with few exceptions. Almost half the exhibitors are expecting the economic situation to improve.

Nevertheless, the general economic situation before bauma and the unexpected ban on air travel at the start of the fair did impact the final figures for visitor numbers: Over 415,000 visitors from more than 200 countries attended bauma 2010. In comparison to bauma 2007, this was 17% fewer. About 65% of the visitors came from Germany. “Despite the many emergency measures implemented not all of the expected visitors from Asia, India and America were able to get to bauma. However, because of the turnaround which bauma 2010 has ushered in for the sector worldwide, we are looking forward optimistically to the already fully booked bauma China 2010 in Shanghai. Interest in the new event bC India 2011 in Mumbai, too, has led to a considerable expansion in the space originally earmarked.

These events will offer international platforms in the two growth markets of China and India, and thus appeal also to the trade visitors who this time were not able to come to Munich,” said Klaus Dittrich, Chairman & CEO of Messe Muenchen GmbH.

Next bauma is scheduled to take place from April 15 to 21, 2013 in Munich.

Ammann launches the SpeedyBatch 210: The SpeedyBatch model offers virtually complete flexibility: assembly and disassembly is extremely simple yet the plant still provides the benefits of a stationary system. The various components are pre-assembled at the factory and then simply joined together on the building site. Electrical connections are made via plug and socket. The silos, filter and dryer drum are connected via special mechanical quick-action couplings. Foundations are not required. The plant is simply installed on compacted levelled ground. Its well though-out and innovative design not only make plant assembly and disassembly easy but also guarantees trouble-free use and maintenance. The storage facility beneath the mixer on the model presented at the Bauma 2010 is an absolute innovation.

The new mixed material storage silo beneath the mixer can hold up to 18 m³, the same amount as a full truck load. The result is a buffer thanks to which production can now run continuously without interruption. The presented model carries the designation SB 210, although the additional silo is also available for the models SB 150, SB 180, SB 280.

2. Doosan’s New 24 tonne DX235LCR: The DX235LCR crawler excavator is designed to meet the continually growing demand for reduced radius crawler excavators for work near buildings and in confined areas.

The DX235LCR offers flexibility, convenience, and low operating cost in a compact design with superior digging performance. The swing diameter is just under 4 m or 3990 mm with a tail swing of 85 mm over 800 mm wide tracks.

The tail swing is 1070 mm less than that of the conventional chassis DX225LC, while the minimum swing radius is 2310 mm. Powered by a 6-cylinder Doosan turbocharged diesel engine providing 123 kW (166 HP) at a maximum governed speed of 1900 RPM, the DS235LCR has an operating weight of 23.6 tonnes and a maximum digging depth of 6670 mm. The dump height is 7925 mm, while the maximum digging reach is 9821 mm. Contact: George Schmalzried, george.schmalzried@doosan.com, Phone: +32 (0)2 371 68 06

3. Dana unveils new drivetrains: Dana Holding Corporation introduced the new drivetrain systems for 16-tonne front-end loaders and eight-to nine-tonne industrial lift trucks, which feature the new Spicer Model 139 axle. Dana also exhibited a drivetrain system for 17.5-tonne wheeled excavators.

The Spicer 319 summing motor transfer case provides maximum tractive performance and high efficiency. Targeted for applications requiring 104 to 164 kW (140 to 220 horsepower), this transfer case employs two hydrostatic motors each with optimised gear ratios. To maximize efficiency at higher vehicle travel speeds, a clutch automatically disconnects the low-speed, high-gear-ratio motor, allowing the high-speed motor to function alone.
