Construction industry’s growth rate has picked up and by 2011-12 the sector could get back to the previously experienced double digit growth rate, according to Dr C Rangarajan, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.
Dr Rangarajan was speaking as the chief guest at the 2nd CIDC Vishwakarma Awards ceremony held on March 7, 2010 at New Delhi. Dr Rangarajan also emphasized that the industry’s growth in turn will help the national GDP to achieve double digit growth. He underlined the need for skill development amongst the industry’s huge work force.
In this context, Dr Rangarajan lauded the efforts of the Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC), the apex body established by the Planning Commission and the construction industry. “Incidentally, these Awards were instituted with the twin objective of recognising industry excellence and encouraging skill development across the industry workforce,” said Shri BN Puri (Sr. consultant -Transport), Planning Commission, Government of India. Shri Puri was one of the jury members of CIDC Vishwakarma Awards.
Some of the finest names from the industry were honoured that evening in recognition of their contribution towards the construction industry at large. These included Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (RIL) (for social upliftment category), Unity Infraprojects Ltd, Everest Industries Ltd & Ashoka Buildcon Ltd (Best professionally managed companies) and Mr Navin Raheja as well as Mrs Vinita Singhania in the industry doyen category amongst others. RIL won the award for the rehabilitation of project affected people from the Sasan ultra mega power project.
