Amidst much speculation about this year’s railway budget to be populist, Ms Mamata Banerjee today (Feb 24) presented her railway budget 2010 announcing some of the major projects under the ‘Vision 2020’. Railways would target to implement 1,000 km route in one year, and 25,000 km in Vision 2020. She said allocation for implementing 1,000 km new lines in a year will be doubled to Rs 4,411 crore.
Ms Banerjee announced that 117 trains will be flagged off; ten Duranto Express will be added; 94 stations to be upgraded and six bottling plant to be put up to provide clean water in cheap rates to passengers. Railways will also construct more underpasses and road over bridges.
She emphasised on the need to have domestic investment through public-private partnership. A special task force will be set up to clear proposals for investment within 100 days. Ms Banerjee said she is proud to have 14 lakh employees and railways would not be privatised.
Railways will set up automobile and ancillary hubs in ten different locations on PPP mode; and five wagon industries in JV-PPP mode, in Secundrabad, Andhra Pradesh, Guwahati, Orissa and Haldia. She said railway coach factory will be set up in Singur if land is available.
Ms Banerjee didn’t increase fright tariff this year and rather cut freight on food grains, kerosene by Rs100 / wagon.
