The Landscapes of Where, an exhibition curated by Nancy Adajania, investigates what landscapes mean in an age when the natural has been menaced or re-formatted by a triad of forces: media, militarisation and surveillance. Says the curator: “The landscape is no longer clearly designated by regional characteristics or specificities of cultural practice. It is a conceptual terrain, inscribed and re-inscribed by narratives reshaping it to their own purposes. The landscape, once the paradigm of location and belonging, is today a guarantee of uncertainty, disturbance, and disorientation.” 

The question is: “How do our contemporary artists position themselves and reclaim the landscape in a time of radical dislocation?” The answer lies in the work of Bombay-based Prajakta Palav Aher and Prajakta Potnis, Delhi-based Pooja Iranna, Guwahati-based Mriganka Madhukaillya and Sonal Jain.

Of these, in Pooja Iranna’s constructed photographs, “the landscapes are subsumed within the surveillance regimes of hypermodern architecture, haunted by the mirages of sky, wind and water.”

Note: Pooja Iranna’s photographs, part of the exhibition titled The Landscapes of Where, are on display at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai, till June 12.
