The five-year Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) launched in April 2005 to electrify 1.25 lakh villages and about 2.34 lakh BPL families looks set to miss its targets with less than 50% of the selected villages being electrified thus far as per official estimates.
The RGGVY scheme will need to electrify more than 63,000 villages in about a year to meet its target before its scheduled closure on March 31, 2010. According to informed sources, with 2009-10 being its last year, there was a need for speedy implementation if the programme was to achieve its set targets on schedule.
Though it is unlikely that the target of 2.34 lakh BPL households would be met given the shortage of time, it was possible to meet the power needs of the remainder of the selected villages, the source added. The Ministry of Power has already sought a minimum budgetary support of Rs9,000 crore to meet the implementation costs of this programme for 2009-10.
