Residents of Thane-Belapur belt in Navi Mumbai will soon have access to state-of-the-art skywalks by end of next year.
In one of its most ambitious initiatives yest, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has announced plans to construct five modular skywalks, each costing approximately Rs4 crore at strategic locations.
Four of the skywalks have been planned on the busy Thane-Belapur road at Nerul stadium, Koparkhairane railway station, Ghansoli railway station and Airoli railway station, while the fifth skywalk is scheduled to be constructed on the arterial Sion-Panvel highway at Vashigaon. NMMC plans on approaching local industrials units in the area to raise finance for the project.

Measuring approximately 5 metres in width and 6.9 metres in height, the proposed skywalks will feature modern elevators, ramps and staircases to ensure easy access to people and vehicles. Each skywalk is expected to accomodate upto 2000 people at a time.
According to NMMC sources, the skywalks will be eco-friendly incorporating the use of recyclable and transparent materials like steel, glass and polycarbonate sheets that will allow natural light.
NMMC engineers plan on using cost-effective and eco-friendly solar panels to generate electricity for the project.
