The Palestinian National Authority is set to adopt a new building code for the West Bank and Gaza, overhauling the current regulations, which are almost 50 years old.
The code has been drawn up to support the Rawabi project likely to serve as a template for construction across the Occupied Territories.
The masterplan [for Rawabi] aims to provide a sustainable environment for a population of 40,000. It requires detailed planning so the town does not become congested. It is looking at both visual and noise pollution.
The masterplan for Rawabi has been carried out by US engineering giant Aecom, with the building code drawn up alongside it. Both are expected to be approved in early 2009. Construction on the $150m first phase of Rawabi is also expected to begin in 2009.
